Morgan Horses @ Okereru

Morgans and Part Morgans are bred at Okereru. Each year we have a small number of offspring for sale. The Morgans are registered with The American Morgan Horse Association while the Part Morgans are registered with The Morgan Horse Association of New Zealand. All our horses are micro-chipped.

We have a Morgan stallion Chalk Mtn Nimble Sprite, and four brood mares: two Morgan (Armagh Joanna and Myross Morgans Jessie), and two Part Morgan.

The horses on our property are usually run in two herds and are generally rotationally grazed behind the cattle around the farm.

The breeding herd includes the stallion, his mares and their foals up until weaning time.

Though many breeders would hesitate in running the stallion with the mares, we have found that with Sprite's temperament he is very content, and that we do not have any problems with having them together in this way. He is gentle with the foals; the lead mare controls the herd and the mares individually decide when they are ready to be served!

Once the foals are weaned we move them off to a separate herd, to continue their education; from us, but also from the older horses running on the property. This group includes the matriarch who is a part Welsh mare who is the first horse we owned, she is now about 27 years old and is enjoying her retirement.

We occasionally run extra herds depending on what is going on with weanlings or un-gelded stock; or if a young horse is just needing that extra bit of work…

Visiting mares are usually run separately.

We train our horses using the techniques of Natural Horsemanship.

The property has two small QEII Open Space Covenants to protect natural resources.

We make a selection of wooden or custom wood furniture for children / people with disability which may be funded by Enable or Accessible.

Each year we raise a number of Friesian x Hereford heifers or steers. Though; this year we are trying out some Brown Swiss x Hereford bulls and some Simmental x Hereford heifers.

This stock is sold over time as weanlings, yearlings or two year olds.
